Newborn Foal Milestones: The 1-2-3 Rule
The first three hours after birth are the most critical window in an equine’s life. Monitor these three veterinary checkpoints immediately.
01
Hour 1: Standing
A healthy foal begins attempting to stand within 30 minutes and must be fully standing upright and balanced on all four legs within 1 hour.
02
Hour 2: Nursing (Colostrum)
Foals are born with zero circulating antibodies. The foal must latch and drink the mare’s antibody-rich colostrum within 2 hours to establish passive immunity against lethal infections.
03
Hour 3: Placenta Expulsion
The mare must completely expel the intact placenta within 3 hours. A retained placenta is a life-threatening medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention.
